Hunt Description Shiras moose hunting at its very best. The North Slope Summit unit in northern Utah has some of the best wilderness moose hunting in the lower 48 states. These remote canyons provide excellent moose habitat and enough seclusion for the bulls to grow big.
Very few outfitters are legally licensed to hunt the Uintas North Slope units and this outfitter has held the forest service permit for many years. Licensed to guide most of the North Slope drainages allows them to access new country for each hunter. Summer fishing, hiking and camping trips provides the opportunity to scout this huge territory for the best bulls each year.
This is a back country hunt experienced from horseback. A 6 to 12 mile ride into camp puts the hunter in unpressured moose habitat. Though a small portion of the unit can be hunted from the roads, the moose in these areas get picked through and aren't able to grow to their full potential and are generally smaller than those taken deep in the wilderness.
Drawing a tag to hunt the North Slope Summit unit can be difficult. Purchasing a bonus point every hear is highly recommended. A couple conservation tags are available each year through conservation groups (RMEF, SFW, MDF, etc.) that can be purchased.
(Caution: There are many outfitters that try to guide the Uintas units but few are legally licensed to do so. The forest service strictly limits the number of commercial operations able to operate in this wilderness. This outfitter holds that commercial use permit. Animals can be seized if an outfitter is not properly permitted.)
